Dubai firefighters are set to add a floating drone to their increasingly high-tech range of equipment.

It comes just weeks after Dubai Civil Defense revealed it was also planning to deploy floating barges off the city’s coast to speed response times.

Al Marakeb Boat Manufacturing said it had struck an initial agreement to supply an unmanned surface vessel.

The Sharjah-based boat builder said it can be controlled remotely even in darkness from a control room housed in a 20-foot container.

The vessel increases “the speed of response for marine accidents”, said Major General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi of Dubai Civil Defense, in a statement.

The drone is the latest in a string of headline-making high tech equipment to be utilised by firefighters in the emirate.

Last month Dubai Civil Defense revealed its Dolphin system of tackling marine blazes which utilises a jetpack and jetski.
