The trailer for the live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movie has dropped, and we can finally see what the blue gaming icon looks like. The film stars Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
The beloved 90s character looks slick and quick in the first trailer of the movie. Previously, fan reactions were tepid when the first poster of the film was released back in December.
Here are some cool things we noticed in the trailer.
Paramount rings
The trailer starts with the Paramount pictures logo circled by the famous gold rings from the Sonic games. A small but cool detail for fans of the Sonic games.
Gangster’s Paradise
The music accompaniment to the trailer is a bit odd. Coolio's Gangster Paradise starts playing with the introduction of Jim Carrey's character Dr Robotnik. The song was very popular in the 1990s and featured in the 1995 film Dangerous Minds starring Michelle Pfieffer. Perhaps the track is more of a zeitgeist nod than a clear creative choice.
He’s very fast
Sonic, as some might not know, is mostly known for his speed. Sega showed off their console the Genesis (or Megadrive) with how fast the Sonic game ran. It is then no surprise that he would be incredibly quick in his first film appearance. How fast you may ask? He's clocked doing "760" on the Sherrif's speed gun and that he has caused a boom that's taken out the energy grid of half of North America.
Jim Carrey is back
While he was never really gone, Jim Carrey’s comedic performances have been missed by his fans. What we see of him in the trailer shows us that he’s been given the space and possibly the creative freedom to exercise those comedic muscles. In keeping with the 90s nostalgia, Jim Carrey’s big breaks were in the 90s as well.
Sonic The Hedgehog is slated for a release on November 8 in the US.
