It’s going to be a busy weekend for Blue Fever. The Abu Dhabi vocal group will play back-to-back shows next week at the Abu Dhabi Theatre, with headline performances at The Just Voice and Jazz to Jive festivals on June 5 and 6.

Soprano Zakaia Cvitanovich says members of the 15-strong a cappella jazz group are preparing for the dates with two rehearsals each week.

The Kiwi singer says she joined the group two years ago after watching them perform at The Club in the capital. “What really struck me was not only how good they were, but also how much fun they were having,” she says. “I just thought: ‘Oh my God, I just have to be part of this.’”

However, joining was not an easy process – aspiring Blue Fever members have to undergo a rigorous audition process.

“It takes about two weeks,” says Cvitanovich. “You first sing solo for the group and then a couple of people are invited back. Then you have to sing together with the group, because in choirs it is all about how your voices blend together.” The group, which lifted the Choir of the Year prize at the vocal competition ChoirFest Middle East in Dubai last year, is also seeking new members. “We are looking for a second soprano and another tenor,” says Cvitanovich.

• Just Voices is at Abu Dhabi Theatre on June 5 at 7pm. Jazz to Jive is at the same venue on June 6 at 7pm. Tickets for each event cost Dh50 for adults, Dh25 for children, available at the door or at the video desk at Spinneys Khalidiya. www.bluefeverabudhabi.weebly.com
