DUBAI // The Philippines national carrier is suspending flights between Abu Dhabi and Manila.

On Monday, Philippines Airlines said it was scrapping flights between the capital cities effective July 8.

The airline runs flights from Abu Dhabi on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The move, which is thought to affect hundreds of passengers, is part of a “route assessment”, the carrier said.

“Philippine Airlines will be temporarily suspending flights to and from Abu Dhabi effective July 8 this year until further notice,” it said on its website.

“The temporary cancellation of the service is being carried out as the airline undertakes route assessment initiatives.”

It said it was seeking the “kind understanding of affected passengers as the airline implements these operational adjustments”.

The move may be in response to rival airlines offering cheaper fares.

Emirates and Etihad have return flights to Manila for about Dh2,100, departing on July 8 and returning on July 22.

Qatar Airways offers fares of about Dh2,900 and budget Philippines airline Cebu Pacific has seats for Dh1,800 over the same dates.

This compares with prices of about Dh3,600 with Philippine Airlines .

Passengers with tickets for the Manila to Abu Dhabi flight dated July 8 and onwards can have ticket refunds or fly through Dubai.

Those choosing Dubai will be taken by buses arranged by the airline to and from Abu Dhabi.

“Affected passengers are advised to avail of any of these options within 30 days from original flight dates, with rebooking or refunding charges waived,” the carrier said.

“Philippine Airlines will also communicate with affected passengers by email notification and call-out. The airline shall inform the public once the service resumes.”

More information is available from the airline's hotline (02) 8558888, its website or from the nearest Philippine Airlines ticketing office or travel agent.
