A fire erupted in three cars and spread to three warehouses near Dubai International Airport on Sunday.

Civil Defence said the fire began at 12.25pm in the cars parked near Abu Baker Al Siddique Metro station in Deira.

Firefighters from Port Said, Al Hamriyah and Al Rashidiyah Stations were sent to extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported.

Though the fire sent smoke over Dubai International Airport, a spokesperson said that operations were not affected by the blaze.

Police temporarily closed Salah Al Din Street and all roads to Al Khubaisi area for one hour from 2.45pm to allow firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

The fire lasted about four hours and was put out by 4.40pm, according to Col Ali Hasan Al Mutawa, deputy head of rescue and civil defence.

He said initial suspicions that the warehouses stored gas canisters was incorrect and that two were car repair garages and the third contained paints and paper.

Meanwhile, residents took to social media to share pictures and videos of the black smoke billowing into the air.
