An Emirati man was found dead in his hotel room in Lebanon on Monday, the UAE Embassy said.

Ahmed Al Awadi, who was in his fifties, had been staying at Grand Kadri Hotel in Zahle, about 50km west of the capital, Beirut.

Hamad Al Shamsi, the UAE Ambassador to Lebanon, said a preliminary medical assessment indicated that the cause of death was a heart attack, but investigations are still ongoing.

Mr Al Shamsi is co-ordinating with the Lebanese authorities to repatriate the body to the UAE.

Local reports said the man died of a heart attack on Sunday and was discovered in the hotel room after an acquaintance could not contact him.

The man had travelled alone to Lebanon the week before.

Up until this month, Emiratis had been banned from travelling to Lebanon.

The ban, which was enacted in 2016, was lifted after a visit from Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Al Hariri to the UAE.
