Here is your digest of what is making the headlines in the Emirates.

The makers of the world’s first Phase 2 AI-generated drug said the UAE can be at the heart of a new era in the fight against disease.

The drug discovery process, traditionally long and complex, is undergoing a significant transformation with the rise of artificial intelligence.

Historically, developing a new drug could take up to 12 years and had a success rate of less than 1 per cent.

But AI is set to change this, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs dramatically.

“AI provides a way to convert money into drugs,” Alex Zhavoronkov, founder and chief executive of Insilico Medicine, a clinical stage biotech company powered by generative AI, told The National during Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week.

“You can have luxury cars and everything but you can't live without drugs. You die without drugs and, in our case, we want to make sure people die late in life."

Sheikh Hamdan announces new Dubai quality of life strategy

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, has approved the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033.

To be carried out in three phases from 2024 to 2033, the strategy aims to increase the length of beach cycling tracks by 300 per cent, extend the length of night swimming beaches by 60 per cent, and designate new beaches for women.

More than 30 parks with new designs will be developed across the emirate within three years.

It will also see 1,000 annual sporting, community, cultural, artistic and entertainment events with allocated areas for entertainment, tourism and hotels to increase by 134 per cent.

Khalifa University ranks in top 30 young universities globally

Khalifa University has ranked among the top 30 young universities worldwide as strong investment in research and industry links in the UAE pays off.

The university in Abu Dhabi came 27th, up from 49th last year, according to the latest Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024, published on Tuesday.

Five UAE higher education institutions appeared in the top 100 worldwide, up from four last year.

UAE University was also among the top 50 in 47th place, a drop from 38th last year.

Abu Dhabi University was 60th, slipping from 58th last year, while the University of Sharjah ranked 69th, down from 43rd.

Zayed University made a big jump into the top 100, in 98th, up from the 151-200 band last year, while the American University of Sharjah moved into the top 125 universities from the 201-250 band last year.
