Carrie Johnson, the wife of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is pregnant with her second child.

Mrs Johnson, 33, made the announcement on Saturday in a social media post in which she also revealed she had suffered a miscarriage earlier this year.

She had her first child with Mr Johnson, 57, last year, a boy who was named Wilfred after the Prime Minister's grandfather.

The couple married at Westminster Cathedral in London in May, in a ceremony that was limited to 30 people under the coronavirus restrictions in place at the time.

Mrs Johnson gave a hint that her second baby is due around Christmas, posting her announcement with a picture of a festive bauble shaped like a child's pram.

“I feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant again but I've also felt like a bag of nerves,” she told her Instagram followers.

“At the beginning of the year, I had a miscarriage which left me heartbroken,” she wrote.

“I found it a real comfort to hear from people who had also experienced loss so I hope that in some very small way sharing this might help others too.”

She referred to her second child as a "rainbow baby", a term for a baby born to a couple who have previously lost a child through miscarriage, stillbirth or death in infancy.

Mr Johnson has at least six children by three different women. He married Carrie Symonds, as she was previously known, after divorcing his second wife Marina Wheeler.

The full name of their first child is Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas. The third name was chosen in tribute to two doctors, both called Nick, who treated Mr Johnson when he was in intensive care with Covid-19 last year.

It was the third time this century that a British prime minister had a child while in office. The wives of Tony Blair and David Cameron both gave births while during their husband's terms.
