LOS ANGELES // A man accused of making online death threats to children was yesterday being held on US$1 million (Dh3.67m) bail.
Eric Yee, 21, a former student at the prestigious Yale University, allegedly posted the comments on the ESPN sports website.
The comment said he was watching children and would not mind killing them, LA County sheriffs said on Tuesday.
Mr Yee was arrested on Monday at his parents' home, which overlooks two schools in Santa Clarita, California. Several guns were found there. Police said he was arrested during their investigation into terrorist threats.
Experts said the bail set was very high for a person suspected of making terrorist threats, and was normally reserved for murder and crimes that can result in life sentences.
Mr Yee was arrested after ESPN reported the threats, which were posted on the reader response section of an online story about Nike trainers that cost $270.
Some of the 3,000 comments said children could possibly get killed over the expensive trainers, said Mike Soltys, an ESPN spokesman.
The online post said a shooting would be similar to the cinema attack in Aurora, Colorado, in which 12 people were killed and 58 others injured in July, the authorities said.
