Tim Marshall explores how the US President will approach his latest round of international diplomacy

US President Donald Trump is a man who has never met a red carpet he didn't like. So his hosts roll them out and try to cope with his dislike of multi-lateral diplomacy.

Fresh from a visit to Japan, Mr Trump is on a first state visit to Britain, where he will be treated to tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle and a round of golf in Scotland on a course he owns.

But despite his hosts pulling out all the stops for the American president's visit, he is likely to "breathe fire" on outgoing prime minister Theresa May.

As Tim explains from The National's London bureau: "He likes a red carpet. But he likes unsettling people."
