Set up in 1949, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) supports more than 5 million Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

The US used to be the largest contributor to the organisation, but the latest move to cut funding has been met with sharp criticism.
