CAIRO // An Egyptian security chief said a car crash in the country's south has killed 12 members of one family.

Gen Salah Mouzeid said the accident took place earlier today when the minibus the family was travelling in collided with another car near the village of Al Soubayrat, outside the city of Qena.

Gen Mouzeid said the family members were heading to the Qena prison to visit a relative. Qena is about 465 kilometres south of Cairo.

Road accidents are common in Egypt due to badly maintained roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws.

Police estimate road accidents kill about 6,000 people annually in the nation with a population of about 82 million.
