Work on four new tunnels that run underneath the new and old Suez Canals is almost done.
President Abdel Fattah El Sisi will open the new tunnels on October 6, local media reported. The date marks the start of Egypt’s war with Israel in 1973.
Engineers said travel times crossing the canal would be cut from hours to around four minutes as vehicles will no longer use ferries or cross the Al Salam bridge about 25 kilometres north of Ismailia.
The New Suez Canal, a 72km shipping lane parallel to the 149-year-old canal, opened in 2015.
