Rocket hits Jordanian port

A rocket smashes into a street in the Jordanian port of Aqaba, killing one man and injuring four people.

A Grad-type rocket smashed into a street in the Jordanian port of Aqaba today, killing one man and injuring four people, one seriously, the interior minister said. Two cars were wrecked in the blast, which occurred near the Intercontinental hotel, the interior minister Nayef Qadai said. "A Grad rocket fell in the street in Aqaba, near to the Intercontinental hotel, destroying two cars and injuring four people, one of them seriously," Mr Qadai said, adding that he had no further immediate information. A security official said: "Subhi Yousef al-Alawneh died in Aqaba as a result of wounds he sustained from the rocket attack," the security official said. The 51-year-old taxi driver died at military-run Princess Haya hospital in port city, he added.

The information minister Ali Ayed said in a radio interview the blast occurred at about 7.45 am (4.45am GMT). Israel's army radio earlier today said five rockets on Monday slammed into the Israeli port of Eilat, less than 10 km from Aqaba, causing no casualties. * AFP
