One of Lebanon's most wanted killed in Syria

Abdel Ghani Jawhar has been killed in Syria fighting against government troops, according to residents in his hometown in northern Lebanon.

BEIRUT // One of Lebanon's most wanted men has been killed in Syria fighting against government troops, according to residents in his hometown in northern Lebanon.

"We are sure Abdel Ghani Jawhar was killed in Syria," Abu Mohammed, 50, a resident of the town of Bibnin, said yesterday.

"Everyone here is sure about it, even those closest to him."

News reports have said Jawhar, leader of Fatah Al Islam, an Al Qaeda-inspired militant group, died recently in clashes with the Syrian army.

Other accounts have said the master bomb-maker was killed in Syria while planting explosives.

Jawhar was accused of killing 14 Lebanese soldiers in Tripoli in 2007. He was also accused of attempting to assassinate the Lebanese army chief Jean Kahwaji.
