Major earthquakes in Iran

April 10, 1972

A 7.1 magnitude quake struck southern Iran around Ghir Karzin, killing 5,074 people.

September 16, 1978

15,000 people killed by a 7.8 quake in the eastern town of Tabas.

June 11, 1981

A 6.9 magnitude quake destroyed Golbaf, 800km southeast of Tehran, killing 3,000.

June 21, 1990

50,000 died and 100,000 injured in the worst-recorded disaster. The 7.4 quake devastated the Caspian regions of Gilan and Zanjan.

May 10, 1997

A 7.3 magnitude quake killed 1,567 people in rural eastern areas near the Afghan border.

December 26, 2003

A 6.6 magnitude quake devastated the city of Bam, 1,000km southeast of Tehran, killing about 31,000.

August 11, 2012

Two quakes, measuring 6.4 and 6.3, killed 250 and injured 2,000 near Tabriz city, East Azerbaijan province.
