Pair charged with FGM of three-year-old
Both also accused of possessing extreme pornography
Two people have appeared in a UK court charged with the female genital mutilation of a three-year-old girl.
The pair from east London are also accused of possession of extreme pornographic material and face five charges overall.
The 42-year-old man from Ghana and 36-year-old woman from Uganda are not being named for legal reasons and are also charged with failing to protect a girl from FGM. They appeared at Thames Magistrates Court on Friday.
The woman also faces charges distributing an indecent video of children and the man is accused of possessing indecent videos of a child.
They were remanded in custody and are due to appear at the Old Bailey on 31 August having been arrested on 29 August 2017.
The Metropolitan Police said the two were arrested following investigations by its Child Abuse and Sexial Offences Command.
FGM was outlawed in the UK by the Prohibition of Female Circumcison Act 1985, which made it an offence to perform FGM on children or adults.
