Attempt to embarrass newly-sworn in Congresswoman with old video backfires
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's supporters defend her after dance video is posted
Thousands of supporters of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sprang to the defence of the youngest woman ever elected to the US Congress and seemingly shut down an attempt to embarrass her on Twitter just as the New York Democrat was sworn in as a member of the House of Representatives.
The backlash began shortly after a Twitter user by the name of @AnonymousQ1776 posted a video of Cortez, 29, back when she was at college.
The video shows Cortez dancing on a rooftop in a manner similar to a scene from the classic 80s movie, The Breakfast Club.
“Here is America’s favorite commie know-it-all acting like the clueless nitwit she is,” tweeted AnonymousQ along with the video.
Thousands responded to the tweet by coming to the defence of Ocasio-Cortez.
“That Ocasio-Cortez dance video actually makes me like her more,” tweeted another.
US actor and comedian Patton Oswalt also chimed in, sarcastically tweeting: “She’ll never recover from the world seeing her dancing adorably and having fun with her friends.”
Ms Ocasio-Cortez has not yet commented on the video.
As for the person who posted it, @AnonymousQ1776’s account appears to have been deactivated after the attempt to embarrass the new Congresswoman received criticism from thousands of other Twitter users.
The original video post was taken down, but has since appeared elsewhere as many continue to come to the defence of Ms Cortez.
