Coronavirus latest: UAE reports 240 new cases

Saudi Arabia to cover private sector wages as a 24-hour curfew begins in Makkah and Madinah

The UAE on Friday announced 240 new cases of Covid-19, taking the total to 1,264, with one new death.

There are an extra 12 people who have recovered, taking that count to 108.

A 51-year-old, who was suffering from chronic disease and kidney failure, was confirmed as the country’s ninth death.

Saudi Arabia reported 154 new cases and four more deaths on Friday as a 24-hour curfew began in Makkah and Madinah.

Bookings began for repatriation flights serviced by Emirates and Etihad from Sunday.

The number of coronavirus cases around the world surpassed one million on Thursday with the US accounting for about a quarter of infections.
