More than 20 workers were rescued after a fire broke out at a labour accommodation in Ras Al Khaimah.

Fire fighters and paramedics raced to the site in Ul Uraibi after the emirate's civil defence were alerted to the blaze at 2.41am on Monday.

Fire crews evacuated the building and brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading.

An investigation found the fire was caused by a fault in an air conditioning unit.

None of the 22 workers housed in the residence were injured.

Fire fighters in the emirate also came to the aid of an elderly resident after a gas cylinder in her home in Shamal caught fire on Sunday afternoon.

The woman suffered smoke inhalation and was given first aid by paramedics after the blaze tore through her home.
