Worker dies after valve strikes his head

The Indian man, in his 40s, was killed instantly, while a colleague who was seriously injured remains in hospital.

ABU DHABI // A construction worker was killed yesterday when he was hit on the head by a metal valve that was shot from a cylinder of compressed air. 

A co-worker of the victim was seriously injured in the incident, which occurred at a television studio complex belonging to Abu Dhabi Media Company. The men, subcontractors, were testing the cylinder in an equipment room at around 4pm when the valve blew off, said a witness.

The two men were working in a wing of the building that is still under construction. Abu Dhabi Media Company, which operates the studios, owns and publishes The National. The man who died was an Indian in his 40s, the witness said. The second man, who is 35 and from China, was rushed to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City. About 100 people were evacuated from the building after the incident and were allowed to re-enter a short while later.
