DUBAI // A carpenter killed and robbed a man who was so drunk that he had to ask for help to walk home, a court heard yesterday.

HA, a 29-year-old Bangladeshi, was at the Dubai Investment Park bus stop at almost 11pm on October 16 when he saw MS, whose age and nationality were not provided.

According to prosecution records, HA said that MS was so drunk he could barely walk. MS asked if HA could walk him home.

HA claimed that when they reached a dark area, MS urinated on himself. "He then started insulting me and my family," the defendant said.

HA said that he began punching the man on his head, face and chest. MS fell to the ground and continued his insults, which caused HA to continue his assault.

"He stopped insulting me and went quiet, so I checked him and saw he was breathing heavily," the defendant said.

He allegedly told prosecutors that he stole the man's mobile phone and wallet, which contained Dh25 and a Nol card.

He fled the scene, leaving MS lying on a hill face down, which made it hard for him to breathe.

MS's body was found 10 days later by a Dubai Municipality cleaner. The body had been partially covered with sand.

Police investigations led to the arrest of HA at a construction site on Palm Jumeirah.

A forensics report said the victim died of head injuries.

The defendant did not appear in court. The next hearing is scheduled for June 12.
