Police arrested the woman after a security guard identified her
Woman 'steals Dh1m and jewellery from relative'
Ajman Police arrested a woman on suspicion of stealing nearly Dh1m and jewellery valued at Dh150,000 from her relative’s flat.
The 25-year-old woman was identified by the building’s security guard who said he saw her leave a safe on the steps of the building’s entrance earlier this month, police said.
“She left the safe then went into the building, few minutes later I saw her coming back with a man who was carrying a large box covered with a piece of cloth. I heard her asking for the man’s help to load it into the boot of a taxi that had been waiting for her,” said the guard.
Maj Ahmad Al Nuaimi, acting director of Ajman Police’s Criminal Investigations Department, said they received a complaint from an Afghani man saying someone had broken into his apartment and stolen Dh945,000 in cash and jewellery worth Dh150,000.
Police tracked the woman down and arrested her in Sharjah, where she lived.
“During questioning she admitted planning the crime ahead of time and said that she bought a safe in order to replace it with the one she planned to steal, but she couldn't carry it because it was very heavy and therefore left it on the entrance of the building,” said Maj Al Nuaimi.
He said the woman waited to make sure all her relatives had left the apartment then went upstairs and broke into the flat. “She placed the safe in a box, then covered it with a piece of cloth and asked one of the cleaners around to carry it down for her,” said Maj Al Nuaimi.
Police did not say if the cash and jewellery were recovered.
Upon her arrest, the woman was referred to public prosecution.
