A woman who slit her wrist to 'scare' off her boyfriend from agreeing to an arranged marriage has been jailed.

The 23-year-old took drastic action after hearing of the wedding plan by her partner's mother, but denied she was attempting to take her own life, Dubai Court of Misdemeanours heard.

The Indian woman was found bleeding from the wrist near a metro station in Al Qusais, Dubai, on August 29 of this year.

Police were alerted and the woman was rushed to hospital for treatment.

When she was later questioned by police, she denied trying to kill herself.

“I heard that my boyfriend’s mother was looking for a woman to marry to her son, so I decided to do this act to scare him and stop him from doing what his mother wanted him to do. I didn’t really want to kill myself,” she told prosecutors.

She said that the couple had been in a relationship for nearly a year, during which time the man had sex with her and promised to marry her.

“He told me he loved me and promised that we will get married and even bought me a gold chain, but when his mother told him she was looking for a bride, he simply agreed, ” said the saleswoman.

She was charged with attempting to commit suicide.

Both the woman and her 26-year-old partner, a salesman, also from India, were charged with having sex out of wedlock.

They were convicted of all charges and each jailed for one month.

Both will be deported once they have served their sentences.
