ABU DHABI // A Filipina charged with killing her Emirati husband in their family home in Bani Yas failed to appear for the first hearing of the case at the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court yesterday. The woman, ALG, 39, is being held at the Al Wathba jail pending the trial. ALG's co-defendant, identified as AAA, 42, a Syrian, was present in court. The judge read out the charges before the Syrian man then adjourned the hearing to Dec 14.
The Philippine embassy hired a lawyer to defend ALG after she was arrested for the murder of her Emirati husband, MHN, 70. The lawyer confirmed yesterday that ALG and AAA were both charged with the murder of MHN in June. Police said in July that the woman had called them after her children found MHN dead in bed. She told police her husband had gone to sleep after taking his diabetes medication and his children found him dead next morning. Police say they found blood on the man's face and knees, and concluded he had been strangled.
Laboratory tests showed traces of the victim's skin under his wife's fingernails, and DNA tests revealed two of her children were fathered by the Syrian, say police. The man has denied any involvement in MHN's death, or having an affair with ALG. rruiz@thenational.ae
