Winners of Dh7m Sheikh Zayed Book Awards named

The awards, with total prize money of Dh7 million, this year attracted 1,262 entries from 30 countries.

ABU DHABI // A study of contemporary Arab thought and a retelling of 1,001 Arabian Nights are among the winners of this year's Sheikh Zayed Book Award, announced yesterday.

The awards, with total prize money of Dh7 million, this year attracted 1,262 entries from 30 countries.

"This huge number is a big responsibility for us and makes us set even more rigorous standards," said Dr Ali bin Tamim, secretary general of the awards, which are under the patronage of Abu Dhabi's Tourism and Culture Authority.

Elizabeth Kassab, from Lebanon, was the winner in the Contribution to the Development of Nations Award, with her book Contemporary Arab Thought.

Ms Kassab said she was "very happy" to have won the award.

The awards ceremony takes place at Adnec on April 28.
