WATCH: What's up with Skype in the UAE

We explain why the video calling service has not been working

UAE residents have been complaining during the past couple of weeks that the phone and video service Skype has been disrupted.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority however released a statement clarifying that there was "no change" in the UAE's Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) policy.

This has coincided with the launch of regulated VoIP apps by the UAE's telecoms operators du and Etisalat.

Skype, which has 70 million users worldwide, was previously reported to have been inaccessible to users in the UAE in June, much to the frustration of expatriates who use the free app to make calls to relatives and friends overseas.

The National's Naser Al Wasmi discusses the situation.
