Volunteers will be dishing out meals to motorists across Abu Dhabi as part of a Ramadan safety drive.

Police in the emirate are joining forces with UAE charity Emirates Red Crescent to ensure drivers have an easy route to breaking their fast throughout the holy month.

Traffic police are eager to slash the number of accidents that occur during the traditional iftar rush, when motorists pack the roads on their way home or to eateries to get sustenance.

The move is a key part of Ramadan Aman, meaning Safe Ramadan, in which food is distributed during Maghrib prayer timings on a daily basis.

The initiative will have 10 meal distribution points set up at intersections in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

Drivers will be able to pull over and eat at locations such as Mushrif Mall, near Zayed Sports City, the Civil Defence station intersection, in front of Zayed University and Al Wahda Mall.

Police will be working with traffic and parking services body, Saaed, to ensure the safety of volunteers supporting the cause.

Brigadier general Mahmoud Yusuf, of Abu Dhabi Police, called on motorists to respect speed limits and traffic signals at all times.
