The race volunteer injured during the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon earlier this month remains in a critical but stable condition.

Carly Williams, 27, a Briton, was working at an aid station on March 3 when the professional triathlete Andrew Starykowicz ran into her. He did not complete the race.

"Ms Williams is in intensive care at this time with severe head injuries," a spokesman for the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon said. "Her condition is described as critical but stable."

The school teacher's condition was being closely monitored by her doctors, the spokesman said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her for a speedy and full recovery."

Paul Coackley, the principal at the British School Al Khubairat in Abu Dhabi where Ms Williams works as a physical education and Grade 11 teacher, said the school was overwhelmed by the support of the children and the parents. "We're extremely grateful for all the best wishes and offers of support that we've been receiving," he said.

"It's a very difficult time for the family. The children and the staff are very upset."

Mr Starykowicz, a 29-year-old American, suffered a broken shoulder in the accident and is still in the UAE.

"As per standard practice for any incident involving an injured party, the incident is being investigated by the local police," the triathlon spokesman said. "Andrew is co-operating fully with the police on this investigation to help establish the facts of the incident. His departure date is pending the outcome of the police inquiry."
