HANOI // Vietnamese fishermen have rescued an American man who had been drifting at sea for eight days on a disabled yacht.

Kenneth Putney of Melbourne, Florida, was in good condition yesterday after being rescued on Thursday.

Mr Putney, 54, told Vietnamese authorities that he and three others were towing a yacht from the Philippines to Thailand when the tow rope broke on December 15.

Mr Putney jumped on to the yacht because he feared it would be lost, coastguard officials said. He was rescued by the fishermen 25 kilometres off the coast.
