Unlicensed drivers have been involved in nearly 600 road crashes in Ras Al Khaimah since the start of last year.
RAK Police revealed the figures as they launched a new campaign aimed at highlighting the dangers of flouting the law by getting behind the wheel illegally.
Unlicensed motorists were involved in 490 accidents in 2018, with 90 recorded in the first three months of this year.
Now police are renewing efforts to crackdown on offenders and make the roads of the emirate safer.
“We want to highlight the dangers of driving without a license during this campaign which will start with the school holiday this summer,” said Colonel Ahmad Al-Naqbi, director of traffic at RAK Police.
“We hope to spread a culture of traffic safety that will eventually prevent accidents and curb the negative behavior of drivers.”
He said it was vital that members of the public, particularly parents, support the initiative.
During the campaign, leaflets will be distributed in Arabic, English and Urdu throughout the emirate to help spread the safety message.
People caught driving without a license an face penalties of up to three months in jail and a fine o up to Dh5,000 under UAE law.
