A United Nations agency aimed at promoting international labour standards has highlighted the UAE’s success in improving gender equality in employment.
The new report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) noted the high rate of women’s participation in economic sectors in the Emirates.
A discussion of the paper took place at the 108th session of the International Labour Conference, currently being held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The UAE delegation to the conference is headed by Nasser Al Hamli, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation.
The Emirates Association for Human Rights (EHRA) welcomed the report, which reviewed the government’s work to end discrimination against women.
The report noted that the UAE had adopted a strategic plan - initiated by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, president of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood - to empower women.
The EHRA said Emirati women held key positions in the private sector, including in science, technology, banking and engineering.
The Speaker of the UAE’s Federal National Council and nine government ministers are also women.
