Under-skirt video recordings earn three months in prison
DUBAI // A man who used his mobile-phone video camera to record under women's skirts in a supermarket was sentenced today to three months in prison, followed by deportation.
"I was lured by the devil to do what I did, your honour, and I'm sorry for that," MA, 47, of Syria, told the Presiding Judge Hamad Abdul Latif at the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance this morning.
MA was convicted of sexually assaulting a number of women as they were shopping at the Carrefour at Deira City Centre.
On February 7 of this year, MA was shopping when he activated his mobile phone's video camera and placed it into a small shopping basket that he was carrying.
Then, he moved from one spot to another, following women who were wearing short skirts. He placed the basket near each woman's legs, and videotaped their private parts under their skirts.
Prosecutors said he followed more than one woman and also a young girl. He was seen picking up his shopping basket from time to time, and changing the setting of his camera, or checking the recordings.
"I admit I did it, but I didn't mean any harm, and it was not in my intention to publicise the tapings," MA told the court.
"I ask for your leniency, your honour,'' he said. "I know I did wrong." A security guard at the shopping centre spotted MA following women and placing his shopping basket suspiciously close to them. The guard reported MA's actions to police at the shopping centre.
HD, a 24-year-old police lieutenant, said that when he received the report from the guard, he sent officers to arrest MA and seize his phone.
"I didn't see what was on it," MA told the judge when asked about the nature of the recordings, adding that police took the phone before he could view any of the recordings.
