More than 100 residents were forced to leave their homes after a fire broke out at an apartment block in Umm Al Quwain.

The Al Reem building was evacuated while crews from the emirate's civil defence battled the blaze.

Firefighters and paramedics raced to the scene, in the Al Rawda area, at 10.35am on Thursday.

Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen billowing out of a window of the building.

No injuries were reported.

A total of 120 residents were safely ushered out of the building while the fire was extinguished.

“Firefighters evacuated the building and managed to control the blaze followed by a successful cooling process,” said Colonel Dr Salim Bin Hamda, head of UAQ Civil Defence.

“No injuries were reported in the fire,” he said.

The cause of the fire was not disclosed.
