DUBAI // More than 5,000 luxury Lexus cars are being recalled across the UAE because if there is heavy snow in the country the windscreen wipers might not work.

A total of 5,421 Lexus IS vehicles made between May 2005 and October 2011 will be recalled as part of a global campaign to fix a loose nut on the front wipers.

“Following communication with Lexus Japan, we have begun a customer-service campaign on the front wipers in the IS range,” said Saud Abbasi, general manager of Al Futtaim Motors.

“According to the manufacturer, if movement of the wipers is restricted by an external load, such as a build-up of heavy snow on the windshield, one or both of the wipers could become inoperative. If this occurs, driver visibility could be reduced. While the possibility of heavy snowfall in the UAE is almost non-existent, this repair will ensure optimal performance of the windscreen wipers.”

About 270,000 Lexus cars are being recalled in North America and Japan. On Wednesday Lexus’ parent company, Toyota, announced a recall of more than a million cars in the US and hundreds of thousands in Canada, Mexico and Japan for problems with airbags.

The UAE was not affected.
