The UAE claimed two gold medals, one team and one individual, at the 15th GCC Golf Championship at the Royal Golf Club in Bahrain yesterday.

Sohail Al Marzouqi and Hassan al Musharrekh led the UAE to gold in the junior division, while Ahmed al Musharrekh was the winner of the senior individual goal, beating Bahrain's Nasser Yacoob Salah by two strokes.

The UAE's youngsters posted a gross total of 320 to beat their nearest challengers, Qatar, by four strokes. Faisal al Marzouqi was the other member of the team that improved on their runners-up finish last year.

Sohail also finished second in the individual division, one shot behind Ali al Bishi from Qatar, while his compatriot Hassan was third.

The UAE's senior team, comprising Ahmed al Musharrekh, Khalid Yousuf, Abdulla al Musharrekh and Faris al Mazroui, finished runners-up to Bahrain, with Saudi Arabia in third.

Each team's top three scores were counted towards the total in this 54-hole stroke-play event which attracted six teams from the GCC.

Ahmed al Musharrekh later clinched the Emirates' second gold.

"The boys stayed focused on the job at hand and delivered the results expected of them," said Khalid al Mubarak, manager of the UAE team.

"Their overall performance during the championship also reflects on the growing standards of the game among UAE nationals. The aim is to keep better and better every year."
