ABU DHABI // About 10,000 families in Tunisia will receive aid from the UAE in the coming days.

The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation has already distributed 350 food baskets to underprivileged families.

The relief programme is in cooperation with the Tunisian Red Crescent and the Tunisian Union of Social Solidarity, the state news agency Wam reported.

The relationship among the agencies was described as brotherly by the head of the aid team.

The food baskets have been given to families in Sidi Hamada, in Siliana region, and Sidi Hussein Al Sijoumi.

Southern areas of the country will be assisted next, Wam said.

Another project will help 3,000 Tunisian children return to primary school.

So far this year, the foundation has given the Tunisian ministry of health 12 ambulances and 50 items for maternity and paediatric care for use at 13 health centres in various cities.

Other UAE relief agencies have also been giving aid to Tunisia.

In 2011, a group of them collectively delivered Dh42.42 million in aid, according to the UAE Office for the Coordination of Foreign Aid.

Most of the money was used for medicine, hospital equipment, field hospitals and to support a martyrs’ fund.

To assist the country’s development, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development granted Tunisia Dh6m to finish the Sirat dam project, which would boost agriculture. A loan of Dh400,000 was given to help build 20 smaller dams.
