The UAE was elected last night to a three-year term on the United Nations Human Rights Council, one of 21 nations vying for 18 seats.
"It is the culmination of a series of achievements in human rights over the past several years, including the protection and promotion of fundamental freedoms and legal rights of individuals - particularly related to women's rights and children - and in advanced legislation related to foreign workers," said Dr Anwar Gargash, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
"It places greater responsibility on us and requires greater monitoring, with a firm footing in the constitutional principles on which the nation was founded, placing human rights as a top priority."
