ABU DHABI // Drivers with excessive black points are being urged to enrol in Ministry of Interior programmes to have them reduced.

Those with at least 24 black points can cut them by eight. The most points you are allowed is 31.

The ministry has set a deadline of January 31 for drivers to take advantage of the programme.

Lt Col Suleiman Al Daari, of the Ministry of Interior, said the department was offering the classes at accredited training centres to help drivers to keep their licences.

He said that the programme also aimed to promote a traffic-safety culture, reduce road accidents, enhance safety efforts on roads, develop a statistical base and reduce the recidivism rate of traffic offenders.

Lt Col Al Daari said the programme used would be determined by the type of offence. A general programme would be designated for minor offences, such as using a mobile phone while driving, or failing to wear a seat belt.

There is another programme for drivers who have committed major offences, such as jumping red signals or reckless driving, and finally a programme for drivers of heavy vehicles.
