DUBAI // An unmarried woman who flew home to the Philippines to have an abortion was caught out when she suffered bleeding just a few days after returning to the UAE.
D P, 33, was convicted of having consensual sex outside of wedlock with 29-year-old Pakistani S S and of getting pregnant by him.
When she found out she was pregnant, the Filipina flew home to have an abortion.
On June 10 last year, a few days after she returned to the UAE, she suffered severe bleeding and went to Al Baraha Hospital, where it was discovered that she had had an abortion. She was reported to police and during investigations it was found that she had been having sex with S S, who works at a shop at Dubai Mall, in a hotel since January last year.
“I met him on Facebook chat and we became intimate shortly after,” said D P.
She told prosecutors that she remained in the Philippines for 15 days after the abortion but the bleeding started shortly after she returned to the UAE.
The Filipina told prosecutors that she was a virgin before she had sex with S S, but tests showed that she was not. She then confessed that she was divorced and had a seven-year-old child in her home country.
The abortion was performed by a friend of the woman’s for Dh300.
“I’m guilty,” D P told prosecutors when they told her the charges against her.
S S denied being the father when questioned by prosecutors and said that he had always used protection. “I’m guilty I had sex with her but I have nothing to do with her pregnancy,” he said.
At Dubai Court of Misdemeanours on yesterday, both pleaded guilty and said they were getting married.
However, they were both sentenced to a suspended year in jail and were ordered to be immediately deported.
