ABU DHABI // A man has been jailed for 10 years for joining the Syrian terrorist organisation Jabhat Al Nusra.

The Federal Supreme Court heard that Khalifa Thani Al Muhairy, 41, an Emirati, left his family during a trip to Turkey to travel to Syria to become a member of the Al Qaeda-affiliated organisation.

While there, he underwent training and partook in military operations.

His brothers told the court that they thought that Al Muhairy had travelled to Turkey to find a second wife.

The court was also shown a video filmed in Syria in which Al Muhairy was dressed in black and singing a song to children. The judge had requested that Al Murairy undergo tests to clarify if it was indeed him in the video, however, he refused to comply.
