The UAE Cabinet has announced the creation of a new independent board to oversee standards at public schools across the country.

Jameela Al Muhairi, the Minister of State for Public Education, will head the new authority, known as Emirates Schools Establishment board.

On Monday, government officials revealed the body would work towards improving standards within the federal government education sector.

It will also be responsible for helping set up and manage schools and kindergartens, as well as vocational and technical institutes.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, and Khalfan Juma Belhoul, chief executive officer of the Dubai Future Foundation, are among those who have been appointed to the board.

"The Emirates Schools Establishment was established as an independent entity to manage and operate public schools in order to advance the education sector in line with UAE objectives,” a statement from the government news agency Wam said.

“It oversees the implementation of policies, strategies, and standards related to the education sector.”
