Two people who drowned after going swimming off Jumeirah Open Beach at the weekend have been named.
C Rijesh, 31, a paint mixer, and CP Shinil, 26, an accountant, both from the Indian state of Kerala, had been swimming for an hour with three friends on Friday evening when they got into difficulties in strong currents.
"They were in the water since 5pm on Friday when strong currents suddenly pulled them away," said a colleague of the men, who did not want to be named.
"Their friends managed to pull out Rijesh after looking for him for half an hour. But he had swallowed too much water.
Paramedics gave him first aid. But he died on the way to the hospital."
Shinil's body was recovered last night, almost 24 hours after the men were swept away.
"They were both good swimmers. In fact, two Filipino women had been pulled out of the water only a while before the men entered the sea," said the colleague. "They in fact saw them getting medical aid but at that time they did not know they had also nearly drowned."
The three men who were swimming with two deceased, all of whom worked for the Al Reyami group, are being questioned by  police.
