Two men convicted of murdering US businessman in Dubai
One jailed for 15 years, the other for seven
Two men have been convicted of murdering an American businessman visiting the UAE.
An Egyptian man, 25, was sentenced to 15 years in prison while his accomplice, 24, was sentenced to seven years.
Dubai Criminal Court heard how the Egyptian defendant accompanied the US businessman back to his hotel room in April this year before attacking him.
Police said the victim was found naked three days later and been repeatedly hit over the head with a wooden plank.
“The killer told us he met the victim at a Starbucks cafe where they chatted and the deceased promised to find him a job,” a policeman told the court.
“He said they later met at the victim’s hotel room to help work on the accused's CV.
“But when the deceased tried to molest him, he claimed he hit him on the head with a wooden plank and fled the scene after stealing his wallet.
“He said he didn’t know the man was dead and thought he was just unconscious.”
Prosecutors told Dubai Criminal Court that a cousin of the dead man alerted police after not hearing from the victim for several days.
Officers were able to locate his hotel room via a credit card search and CCTV footage from the scene helped them identify the two killers.
