Two young Emirati men have been arrested over the murder of a taxi driver in Fujairah.

The pair, aged 20 and 21, are accused of stabbing the driver in order to steal his money, The National's Arabic sister paper, Al Ittihad, has reported.

On December 21, at around 8.50pm, they flagged down the driver and asked him to take them from a hotel to the Masafi area. Midway, they asked him to take a detour on a dirt road.

"The second accused then tried to immobilise the driver while the other stabbed him multiple times," the police report said.

"As the driver struggled, the first accused kept stabbing him until he lost consciousness, after which they stole his wallet, which contained Dh700, and his mobile and left him there."

The driver was found dead in his car in the Yabsah area, with multiple stab wounds, said Col Mohammed Ahmed Al Sha'er, head of the criminal investigation department at Fujairah Police.

Investigations led to the two men who confessed that they routinely flagged down taxi drivers to steal from them. The pair have also identified the route they took from the point where they were picked up to the crime scene, police said.
