DUBAI // Two Pakistani pedestrians were killed last night when a speeding water tanker driver lost control, skidded and struck them as they stood on a pavement. Salah Bu Farousha, the head of the Traffic Public Prosecution, said the accident happened at 9pm on Saturday when the 50-year-old Sri Lankan lorry driver, who was speeding, lost control of the heavy vehicle which was carrying a half-full tank of water. The accident took place at a roundabout in the Industrial area in Ras Al Khor. "Due to speeding, the truck driver lost control when entering the roundabout. The vehicle drifted 28 metres to the right side and hit a truck parked on the other side of the road and hit the two victims," he said. While one of the pedestrians died at the scene the other later died from his injuries in hospital. "The two pedestrians were standing on the footpath when the vehicle struck them," said Bu Farousha. The driver of the lorry was referred to public prosecution. abubaker@thenational.ae
