DUBAI // Two Asian workers were killed and 18 injured after a collision yesterday afternoon between two private minibuses near the Al Ruwayyah bridge heading towards Sharjah.
Lt Imran Abdullah, of the Dubai Traffic Police, said the crash was thought to have been caused by a speeding minibus that rear ended the other minibus. The injured were evacuated by helicopter to Rashid Hospital in Dubai.
The speed limit for minibuses is no more than 110kph on the road. Each bus can carry 14 people.
In February last year, The National reported that the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology said a new speed limit of 100kph for minibuses would be implemented by 2013.
At the time, Brigadier General Ghaith Al Zaabi, the director of the Traffic Coordination Department, revealed that 12 people had died in minibus accidents in 2011, and 132 others had been injured.
