Two people were killed and six people injured when a driver lost control and hit a group of people offering Al Maghreb prayer outside a mosque.

The incident happened on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road near Sharjah on Saturday evening, according to Dubai Police.

An Asian man was speeding in a four-wheel drive when his tyre blew out, causing him to swerve onto the side of the road and plough into a group of eight people performing Al Maghreb prayer outside a mosque, a Dubai Police official said.

The accident happened near the flyover bordering Dubai and Sharjah.

It's the latest accident in a deadly weekend on UAE roads.

Earlier on Saturday, a person died after a car crashed into a lorry.

The male driver was killed after ploughing into the lorry on Ras Al Khor Road in the early hours of the morning.

“The incident took place at about 2am and was a result of speeding and failure to abide by traffic rules,” said Brig Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic.

The death follows a crash on Friday in which a 16-year-old girl died and five people were injured when the car they were in overturned and crashed into a concrete wall on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

On Saturday morning, a driver of a vehicle hit a motorbike as the biker slowed down at a traffic signal in Umm Sequim. The accident took place at 1.40am, according to Dubai Police.

“The driver of the motorbike was severely injured,” said Brig Al Mazrouei.

On Friday, a man was seriously injured after being run over by a bus on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road near the entrance of labourers’ accommodation.

“This incident took place at 8.15pm when a driver of a bus hit the pedestrian, who was severely injured,” said Brig Al Mazrouei.

Also on Friday, a lorry flipped on its side and caught fire but the driver managed to get out without being injured.

On Thursday, an Arab driver hit a lamppost in Al Quoz and suffered moderate injuries. Police said he was driving recklessly and speeding.

Dubai Police urge motorists to abide by the rules.
