UAE traffic: School run causes road delays

Accidents were reported on Hessa Street near Al Khail road, before the Al Manara road exit towards World Trade Centre and near the Festival City Centre.

DUBAI // Motorists experienced tailbacks on several main and internal roads with parents and school buses dropping children off on the first day back to school.

Heavy traffic in Hessa Street, near the Al Khail road intersection, Discovery Gardens, near Jebel Ali Village and Al Sufouh Road, all delayed commuters.

“I had forgotten schools opened this Sunday or I would have left home earlier,” said June Merchant, an information technology supervisor heading to Jebel Ali and stuck at the Hessa Street exit towards Sheikh Zayed Road.

“It will take me 15 minutes more to get to work unless I leave earlier. I just wish parents didn’t just leave their cars unattended and run in to drop their children, it delays the rest of us.”

Sheikh Zayed Road was also backed up with traffic through to Business Bay towards Sharjah and motorists complained of tailbacks on the Abu Dhabi end towards Jebel Ali.

Accidents were reported on Hessa Street near Al Khail Road, before the Al Manara Road exit towards World Trade Centre and near the Festival City Centre.

Traffic police said four minor accidents were reporter and the areas were being cleared to help ease congestion.
