NORTHERN EMIRATES // Police in Ajman hope this year’s GCC Traffic Week will help to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on the emirate’s roads.

Brig Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, deputy director general of Ajman Police, said 30,531 traffic accidents were reported last year, including 24,806 collisions and 20 deaths.

“Our target is to bring down the road fatalities to international standards of about four in every 100,000 residents,” he said.

Brig Sheikh Sultan said police remained strict with drivers who made illegal modifications to increase speed or sound of their vehicles, with about 500 cars seized and their owners fined last year.

Inspection campaigns will continue throughout the year and will also target car workshops. Brig Al Nuaimi said about 700 motorbikes were also seized last year after their owners were found to not have the proper licence.

In Ras Al Khaimah, Brig Mohammed Al Nubbi, deputy director general of RAK Police, launched the week’s activities along with a visiting delegation from Kuwait.

“This year’s GCC Traffic Week carries a message to all motorists that the preservation of our lives as well as lives of others is a shared responsibility,” he said.

He said the emirate’s police had registered a decrease in the number of traffic-related deaths last year, with 42 compared with 55 in 2012.

In Sharjah, Brig Abdullah Mubarak Al Dukhan, deputy director of Sharjah Police, launched a series of awareness events.

“This year’s slogan, ‘Your Safety is our Goal’ addressed every individual road user, especially the drivers who commit to obeying the country’s traffic rules and regulations and secure many lives on the roads,” Brig Al Dukhan said.

Activities being held around Sharjah this year include a traffic arts exhibition at Mega Mall while vintage vehicles will be on display in a traffic village at Sharjah Museum of Classic Cars.
